Thinking of Becoming a Deputy or Assistant Head?

If you are contemplating that move into senior leadership, Hounslow has the support available to you to help make that decision. Our CPD team and Advisory service run a one-day course for prospective leaders entitled ‘Thinking of Becoming a Deputy?’ at our local Education Centre. This day explores the personal and professional issues related to deciding if you would like to become an Assistant or Deputy Headteacher. The sessions include guidance on how to complete an effective application form and what you might expect at an interview and will help you decide if this if the right career move for you.

LA Induction

Hounslow offers a comprehensive Induction Programme for all new staff to the Borough or new to the role of School Leadership. We feel that a great part of our school's and pupil's success stems from the wide range of support available to the Headteacher / Deputy Headteacher, particularly when they are first introduced to their role. We also feel that is important to encourage collaborative relationships between our Senior Leaders across the Borough. Our dedicated School Adviser for Leadership is closely involved in the programme:

Our senior leader induction programmes are designed to welcome you to the Local Authority, meet key people and, through a rolling programme of sessions, support you in the development of key knowledge and skills for your first year as a senior leader in Hounslow. We are aware that the needs of appointees will vary and will depend greatly on your previous experience. We therefore endeavour to tailor the programme to the needs of individuals”.

Mentoring

Hounslow offers mentoring for its newly appointed Deputy Headteachers whether they are appointed from within the borough or from elsewhere. The aim of mentoring is to provide a guidance and advice whilst settling into the new role of Deputy Headship and an opportunity to build a communication network across senior leaders to aid collaboration and support.

At Primary level, mentoring for Deputy Headteachers takes place with another Deputy Headteacher from within another school in the borough. At Secondary level, this is provided within schools and staff structures. Likewise, mentoring available for Assistant Headteachers can be provided within schools.
