Name: Christopher McAllan
School: Alexandra Junior School, Hounslow
Place of QTS: St. Mary’s University College

What route did you take to QTS and how did you come to apply for a role in a Hounslow school?
BA (ITT) Primary Education
How did you first hear about the Hounslow NQT Primary Pool and what was your experience of the Pool recruitment process?
I applied to the Primary Pool after the recruitment fair at University, and found the process hassle-free and user friendly. The interviews were conducted in a professional manner for the Borough, and when called to an interview at school I found the whole set-up to be well prepared and very encouraging.
What are your reflections on completing your Induction Year with Hounslow?
Working in a Primary school, I enjoy the interaction with the children, watching them develop into independent learners. I have found the collaboration with other staff members to be rewarding, sharing good practice as well as banter in the staff room!
What do you think of the support and training that was offered to you as an NQT by your school and the LA?
NQT training in the borough’s Education Centre, as well as the training I received in school, has provided me with a fantastic opportunity to develop personally and professionally. From initial welcome meetings and weekly training with fellow NQTs, to one-on-one development meetings with tutors in school, I have felt supported and valued as a member of the teaching team. As my career has progressed, I have felt that training and courses have been relevant and interesting, and helped me to develop my teaching skills.
Has working in a diverse borough helped to develop your teaching skills?
The diversity of the borough of Hounslow has given me opportunities that would not have presented themselves to me otherwise. I have learnt from children and adults, class members and parents, about different cultures, countries and religions. For instance, I have been fortunate enough to visit the local Jamia Masjid during the month of Ramadaan, giving me a valuable insight into the Islamic religion.
Do you think that you have been encouraged to develop professionally and increase your skills as a teacher?
Yes… I have already had an opportunity to further my career, and I now work as the Year 4 Team Leader at Alexandra Junior School. I was encouraged to apply for the post, and interviewed by the school’s Headteacher and Chair of Governors.
What would you say to an NQT to encourage them to come and teach in Hounslow?
The NQT training programme is worth it in itself! A very supportive borough, with a lot of opportunities for teachers in the early stages of their careers.
What 3 words describe your experience as an NQT in the borough?
Challenging, supported, rewarding!
